W. (Warren) Leslie Barnette, Jr. was born on July 18, 1910. He graduated from Buffalo's Lafayette High School in 1928 and earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the University of Buffalo in 1932 and 1936 respectively. Before the outbreak of World War II, he did some teaching at the Buffalo Collegiate Center and the State Teachers College of Buffalo.
